Just realized I passed my 11th year on here! :happydance: by a-kid-at-heart Figured I'd do a quick shout out to those of you that are still actively watching, and any new watchers as well.  - NaNoEmo by a-kid-at-heart  The stats say 928 but I'm sure most of them have moved on over the years. But hey, if you're reading this... :HighFive: by a-kid-at-heart

For those of you that don't know me, I'm a 53 y.o. father of two that's been married 34 years, drives a big brown truck 10 hours a day, loves ice cream waaaay too much, enjoys a nice single malt Scotch too little and sometimes, when no one is looking, can get things right. Technology is just a tool... by a-kid-at-heart Let's see, how does that saying go? The older I get, the better I was! :timeflies: by a-kid-at-heart  - PLZ by a-kid-at-heart

Funny how long the days can be, and yet how quick the years fly by. Ups and downs, twists and turns, good times and bad, it just becomes a blur after a while. Many of the things I concerned over 11 years ago don't even phase me now. Part of growing up I guess. One of these days I might have to do that. :necktie: by a-kid-at-heart  :hmm: by a-kid-at-heart

Here at least, I've been able to grow artistically. While I've played with photography since I was probably 6 or 7

(my how that's changed over the years!) , it was getting involved with the emote community that really gave me a way to literally express things through art.

Being inspired to push yourself further is a wonderful thing, especially in a world that seems more intent on beating you down or at best, holding you back. :ScreamFck: by a-kid-at-heart

That's where the "still growing" part comes in. As things on dA changed, and communities changed as well, I found new ways to challenge myself, new people to be inspired by, and new ways to express myself.
Never quit I guess... Progress by a-kid-at-heart

... and thanks for being a part of my journey. :bearhug: by a-kid-at-heart

P.S. Post a thumb below of one of your pieces so I can check you out!

I've picked up a few watchers after the last DD I got and thought I'd say hello. - NaNoEmo by a-kid-at-heart Welcome to my quiet little corner of dA!

So far this year has been pretty good. Work is work, of course, nothing really new there (I drive for UPS if you didn't know). Family is good. No one is in jail :caged: by a-kid-at-heart, the hospital :crippled: by a-kid-at-heart, or anything else worth mentioning :MinionShrug: by a-kid-at-heart. Play and art however have been the highlights! Though neither gets as much time as I would like, I've been trying to make the most of them. If you aren't familiar with Tough Mudder, you can check out this vid. My son and I did our first one in 2015, ran 11 more events last year, and should have another 25 done before this year ends! We've been to Richmond(Virginia), Philadelphia(Pennsylvania), Mt. Snow(Vermont), Oxford(Michigan), and St. Paul(Minnesota) so far this year with Western New York, Toronto Canada, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Missouri, Tennessee, New Jersey, and hopefully North Carolina to do yet! Busy, busy, busy runnin' in the mud! I'd love to hear from any other mudders!
Art has been lacking in quantity, do to limited time, but I've been trying to show more quality at least. The wire art is coming along (I have so much to learn!) and hope to eventually create pieces for people to buy. I don't really care about the money aspect of it, since I don't see myself being able to produce in sufficient quantity to make it profitable, but it would be nice to know people like it enough to want to own it! We'll see how things go by years end. For now, I'll keep honing my skills and find ways to create all the crazy things floating around in my head. Send me a thumb or link with your latest endeavor and I'll check them out!

Here's a few of my latest!

Just sayin'...

5 min read
:Big_Wave: by a-kid-at-heart  I noticed I hadn't written a journal in about a year and a half, which isn't all that odd I guess. I never was very wordy on here. I have more watchers now  :squee-love: - PLZ by a-kid-at-heart and amazingly more activity despite the slow down in submissions. r u serious? by a-kid-at-heart  I'm on here pretty much everyday, but not doing the emotes so much. Of course, if you've been following me a while, you know that. I'm still doing art though.
My latest endeavor is wire art. My daughter makes these wonderful dreamcatchers (which you can check out here if you like them simple, and here if you like them more colorful! - NaNoEmo by a-kid-at-heart) and my son is crazy about spiders, so I came up with an idea for a wire art piece that is almost completed. Won't be long and I'll be posting some pics of it. I'm having a lot of fun doing it and I can't tell you how nice it is to actually be able to hold your creation! If there is interest, I may even make some for sale, so keep your eyes open! :LongStemRose: by a-kid-at-heart

Other than that, it's too much work and little spare time that fills my week. dA is still my place to go for "warm fuzzies" that make me go oooh and aaaaah! It's always nice to hear from someone on here, so even if it's just a hello, send me your favorite wave below! :overhere: - NaNoEmo by a-kid-at-heart

There has been much discussion over the four years I've been emoting (and I know there was a great deal before that as well) regarding the organization of the Emoticon Gallery. Though implementing Add Media was anticipated, and we appreciate the ability of all of us to contribute to the available emotes in comments, its use of the emoticon categories and the inability to keep icons out of them has made a mess of things.

:rut: by a-kid-at-heart
This has, in my opinion, contributed in large part to the lack of activity in the emoticon community. Most of us looked forward to (or depended on) browsing through the gallery for inspiration, concepts, techniques, and most importantly, like-minded deviants. I don't believe there has been a more helpful and pro-active group of deviants on the site. The feedback from and interaction with other emoticonists has been the one thing that has kept me coming back here during those years. Long story short, no gallery... no community.

:icontheemoticongallery:
A solution we at the TheEmoticonGallery are proposing, is to do it ourselves. All emoticonists, and fans of emotes, are invited to join TheEmoticonGallery!

:curious: by a-kid-at-heart
There you will find a gallery structured in simple and well described terms. It has a grand total of 5 categories (folders) to submit to. No icons, no photo packs, no miscats, just emotes with all skill levels encouraged. There will also be a monthly journal that you will be able to contribute to.

Home is where the heart is... by a-kid-at-heart
Over time, we hope that the group will become a hub, a place to not only start for new emoticonists, but one for all of us to come back to to see what's happening in our community, find inspiration, or challenge ourselves! A place we can call our own!

I hope to see all of you there! :icontheemoticongallery:
