Elemental Emoticons by a-kid-at-heart Elemental Emoticons by a-kid-at-heart
My final version. =) I had imagined this as an animation to describe the basics of emoticon usage, but the canvas size makes it insanely large to do as a .gif so I'll just give a little explanation. A favorite phrase of mine is, "Communication is the art of conveying a thought or idea in such a way, the other person understands it the way it was intended." Text often leaves us to interpret things where voice inflection and body language would clarify. An emoticon, besides being colorful and a pleasure to look at, can be an artistic tool to help with communicating your thought or idea more effectively.

Consider the following statement, and how the meaning changes depending on the emote used:

I look forward to seeing you  by a-kid-at-heart

I look forward to seeing you :kinky: by a-kid-at-heart

I look forward to seeing you :rifle: by a-kid-at-heart

I look forward to seeing you :comfort: by a-kid-at-heart

As you can see, a different emote, a different meaning, even when the exact same words are being used! There are thousands of thousands of emotes available for use on dA. You can start here for a more detailed explanation of how to use them in comments and such. The emoticons in the table above are posted individually and like all my emotes, are free to use.

About the Table:
All the chemical elements (their symbols) are represented but not necessarily in the same position.
The Lanthanides and Actinides are represented as frames of the animations Lariat :lariat: - NaNoEmo 05 by a-kid-at-heart and Accordian :accordian: - animated by a-kid-at-heart.
No two expressions are exactly same.
250 colors. I lost track of the hours as many were spent working on an animated version. WIPs can be found here.
Now, go forth and communicate better!

Thanks! Although I intended it to be animated, I'm pretty happy with the result. I never did much in the way of chat friendly emotes before taking this on. It helped a lot. =)

Why elements are messed up?

Do you mean, why are they re-arranged? If so, it's because they are organized by emotional type, as opposed to atomic weight like the chemical version. I used the chemical symbols as a way to create artistic constraints (come up with emotional and action words that use the chemical symbol letters), and give a bit of familiarity to it like the shape/size of the table itself. =)

Thanks! I saved the frames I completed (about 527). I might come back to it if I figure out how to post the animated version.

Thanks! I don't think it's having the same impact the animation would have had, but it's done. I'm moving on to other things now. =)
